CityTransport

CityTransport Kiev — is a new journey planner for rapid transit system of Kiev based on the real schedules of the subway, urban trains and light rail.
CityTransport is an innovative map of rapid urban transport of Kiev. It’s the first solution that plans a route and time expenses using a real schedules rather than some abstract data, which gives superior accuracy.
Every subsystem of rapid urban transportation operates using schedules designed up to seconds with 98% accuracy. There are differend delays, timetables, peak loads and transition potential, thus, the same trip can take different time and different route depending on a time. Our system takes in attention all of this. In addition, our solution gives clear advices where to go for interchange, where you have to pay, and when to go if the route is impossible to complete at desired time, as well an information on every station and stop.
Currently, it’s implemented for a transit system of Kyiv, which consists of around 100 stations, but can be expanded to almost every big city.
On April 2013 our project won an award at Socialboost contest, sponsored by Microsoft.
Our tasks are to improve the quality of life in a modern growing Kiev, help to maintain own time and learn new about the city.
Project history
The first experimental prototype of our system has been implemented in 2009–2010 гг. at official website of CE “Kyiv Subway”. It covered the subway network, as well as a first stage of just created S-Bahn. However, after some changes at subway’s head staff it was removed, as the network expanded.
In the end of 2011 we decided to revive a system as a separate project, with expansion to all high-speed urban transport, and in April of 2012 the first technological prototype was launched.
Our system is the first in Ukraine that accurately combines the prevailing conventional mapping of urban electric transport with its geolocations. We use proven techniques along with a number of new ideas, which allowed to:
- to display the radial-circle structure of the right bank part of the city, and grid structure of the left;
- show the lines generally preserving the real proportions between distances and locations;
- make the scheme easy for orientation and remembering through the visual balance of its parts;
- highlight the main highway routes and key streets, as well as the central part of the city — a place where the greatest density of traffic and the number of important objects. Distance and relative positions between the streets is also largely met.
Colors of “heavy” transport lines were chosen standard, while tram lines and icons are marked basing on the London map, which became the unofficial standard for transport schemes.
Motion schedules that are used in the formation of routes are real and actual. We thank the staff of CE “Kyiv Subway”, CE “Kyivpasstrans”, “Ukrzaliznytsa” (Ukrainian Railways) which helped us and advised us during the development.
